'Tis the Season...To Take a Breath

In the hustle and bustle of the holidays and the year coming to a close it's easy to get caught in the treadmill mentality.  Once you are officially on the treadmill it's only a matter of time before "survival mode" sets in.  We're all familiar with survival mode this is where you start saying, "I'm just going to stay up until I get (fill in the blank) done." and then you find yourself getting to bed at 2 a.m.  The next day when someone at the office cracks out the Mocha Fudge Cheesecake you find yourself saying, "I'm just going to have one piece, after all I was up late last night and I just need to get through today." The next morning when your work out is looming in front of you like the LA Marathon you cut it a little short, after all there is so much going on - and you just need to get through today.  It all seems rather small, but it's like a sweater that begins to unravel.  By the time the holidays are over you feel like a bus has hit you and your pants feel like they shrank at the cleaners.  It doesn't have to be that way.

I decided many years ago that I would give myself a special gift every holiday season; the gift of health and well being.  The rituals that make me feel better both mentally and physically are even more important to me during the holidays.  It actually makes it more fun in the month of December, when I remember that my work out is a gift that I choose to give myself.  Talk about approaching it from a different mindset! I never feel inclined to skip of skimp when I remember it's a present that I am giving myself.  I take care to get great rest (on fabulously decadent linens) and to eat the freshest most fabulous fruits and vegetables money can buy. Bottom line - I pamper myself.

By remembering to put myself and my health first, I actually find that I have more time and energy to give others through the holidays.  Instead of being exhausted and harried, I find myself full of energy, grateful and eager to spend time with friends, family and loved ones.  I love the holidays, I look forward to them every year, and when they are over I feel refreshed, invigorated and ready to attack the New Year with refreshed zeal.  Get off the treadmill this year and do something really wonderful for yourself and your family.  Take care of yourself. Happy Holidays everyone!

You have just put my workout into a whole new light.  I can certainly use that perspective this time of year.  Thanks!

Dear Coco,

I LOVE your post and couldn't agree more!  It's so easy to get caught up in everything over the holidays.  This is very inspiring.  Thank you for sharing.
